Entering sacred space

Wherever I’m staying I try to set up a sacred space. Creating an altar is something that instantly grounds me and helps me to feel focused and clear in my daily practices. It’s not about worship for me, but instead allows me to find my inner compass and opens up the flow of wisdom and messages in my meditative practices. It also serves as a focus for intentions and gratitude. It can be really simple and doesn’t require any special ‘spiritual’ items.

Burn out and adrenal fatigue

As a hyper-perfectionist personality, I have to be mindful of my tendency towards overworking and exhausting the adrenals, which eventually leads to burn-out. This is something that affects the majority of our unnaturally fast-paced increasingly technological society, with symptoms like:

  • Being slow to start in the morning and relying on caffeine.
  • Craving salty or sugary foods and needing snacks.
  • Afternoon fatigue but experiencing a “second wind” in the evening.
  • You can’t stay asleep.
  • You experience dizziness when standing up quickly.
  • Afternoon headaches.
  • Blood sugar issues.
  • Feeling overwhelmed by stressors.
  • Anxiety, depression, lack of motivation.

We seem to think that feeling tired and constantly being busy is how things should be. But this isn’t thriving and over time can lead to depletion. In this compromised state, we’re more easily manipulated and coerced and less empowered to take positive action. Moving at such a fast pace, we also have less energy and mindspace for considering the consequences of our actions, contributing to issues like the global ecological catastrophe we’re experiencing now. Instead, by cultivating restorative practices that incorporate rest help us maintain optimum energy balance actually allows us to be more productive, compassionate, and impactful.

Incorporating cycles of rest is something I’ve had to learn the hard way (and be reminded of many times). After staying up working to the early hours all last week, my body has reminded me of the importance of slowing down, setting my own pace, and not getting caught up society’s expectations. Energy mastery is something I’m constantly guided towards cultivating and told to share the importance of. It is where our power to instigate change lies. It is also our own responsibility to maintain.

Some practices that have helped me heal from adrenal burn out

  • Give yourself permission to slow down and be mindful, let go of pride and be honest about where you’re energy is at.
  • Prioritise daily self-care practices (walks in nature, restorative yoga, meditation, reading, hot baths, getting creative, social media and technology detoxes etc.).
  • Brew your own healing adaptogen elixirs (recipe in next post).
  • Start paying off your sleep debt.
  • Cut out unnecessary energy drains and learn to say NO.
  • Be mindful of what you consume on all levels. Eat a high nutrient density seasonal plantbased diet prepared and consumed with mindfulness and intention.
  • Cultivate a daily gratitude practice and nourishing loving relationships.

What works for me might not work for you. Check in with yourself and your needs rather than blindly following my recommendations.

Changing your value systems

For me, the process of healing has involved me changing how I valued my sense of achievement from how much I could outwardly cross off my to-do list in a day, to how much love I gave, how much I lived in alignment with my heart, how authentic I was to embodying and sharing my values and mission. The impeccability of my vibe is more important to me than how much I get done.

Gratitude to all that have helped me reach this wisdom and for the reminders when I start to stray back towards overachieving. Maintaining these practices is essential for heart-centred living in alignment with what’s best for all beings and the Earth.

Recipe Notes

The plants are here to support us, but we shouldn’t rely on them whilst burning the candle at both ends, we still have to listen to their wisdom, take responsibility for our own energy balance, and prioritise self-care practices.
